0701-0034-4306 - Silhouette of Devils Marbles

Caption

Silhouette of the Devils Marbles against a dramatic sky at sunset. This area consists of naturally rounded boulders (called Karlu Karlu by the local Aborigines). The site is located near Wauchope, about 114km south of Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. In the myths of the Kaytetye people the boulders are said to be the eggs of the rainbow serpent. Over time, the ceremonies and stories related to the Devils Marbles have mainly been lost, but still the site is sometimes considered to be one of the oldest religious sites in the world. Northern Territory, Australia
